About us

Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft is the world’s leading applied research organization. It operates 76 institutes all over Germany.

For over 30 years, the Audio and Media Technologies division of Fraunhofer IIS has been shaping the globally deployed standards and technologies in the fields of audio and moving picture production. Starting with the creation of mp3 and continuing with the co-development of AAC and the Digital Cinema Initiative test plan, almost all consumer electronic devices, computers and mobile phones are equipped with systems and technologies from Erlangen today.

No matter where you are, Fraunhofer's codecs make audio, voice, and video transmissions more intelligible, reliable, efficient, and accessible. From everyday streaming and TV broadcasting to wireless audio transmissions, to mission-critical communication, our solutions ensure reliable, high-quality delivery of speech and sound across all environments and device classes.

Explore Fraunhofer NESC, an AI-based voice codec enabling satellite calls at ultra‑low bitrates and experience xHE-AAC for high‑quality voice messages in native mobile apps. See our JPEG XS codec in action for lossless IP video transmission and get a technology preview of our AI‑based NCVC video codec.

NESC - Ultra efficient AI-based voice codec for reliable D2D-satellite communication

At only 1 kbit/s or less, our NESC codec enables efficient and robust voice transmission in areas where reception is only possible via direct-to-device satellite connectivity, making universal coverage a reality. NESC helps to facilitate NTN voice services over GEO, MEO and LEO constellations ranging from emergency services, audio messaging applications to satellite voice services that are comparable in quality to terrestrial calls. Fraunhofer NESC with its market leading coding efficiency is ready for commercial deployment at scale by SNOs and MNOs today.

JPEG XS for ST2110, IPMX, MPEG-TS made for professional live production

JPEG XS is the new ISO/IEC codec for all IP workflows in studio environments, live productions, local video networks, and VR/AR applications. JPEG XS enables the transfer of high-resolution video data over standard Ethernet or other wired connections. The codec is designed to operate with low latency and limited computing resources. Fraunhofer IIS provides a JPEG XS SDK with an 'Application Support Package' that enables users to easily implement JPEG XS in typical workflows such as camera-to-stream and stream-to-display using sample codes for encoding and decoding.

JPEG XS offers compression ratios ranging from 6:1 to 16:1 (typically 10:1), predictive and precise rate control, and RTP streaming support.

Fraunhofer NCVC – Neural network-based codec for video communication

The NCVC codec, shown as technology preview, is designed to enable a smooth video conferencing experience at an ultra-low bitrate and with low latency over narrow-band transmission links. Given these characteristics, it is an ideal solution for video conferencing via Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellites, enabling direct-to-device transmission (D2D) between smartphones. NCVC enables the transfer of video and audio data at a bitrate of 3-20 kbit/s and 25 fps. Using AI-enhanced methods, the codec separates the background from the foreground of images and compresses them independently. For video conferences in particular, the image data of faces and shoulders is compressed in higher quality than the surrounding areas to guarantee a smoot live transmission. Using intra-frame coding (i-frame) and key points, the codec can predict the changes between two i-frames without using p- and b-frames, enabling ultra-fast and ultra-efficient video coding at under 10 kbit/s, including audio.

xHE-AAC – Efficient Audio Streaming and RCS Voice Messaging

xHE-AAC is the latest generation of the trusted AAC codec line used by leading OTT platforms like Audible, Netflix, Facebook Stories, and Instagram Reels to deliver premium audio to billions of consumers. It delivers a better listening experience: smooth HLS/DASH streaming from ultra-low to high bitrates, consistent loudness across all content and devices, and clearer speech — even when network conditions fluctuate. The technology is natively supported in iOS, Android OS, Vega & Fire OS, as well as Windows 11.
